Donald Trump’s sudden decision to withdraw 2000 U.S. troops from Syria is a green light to Recep Tayyip Erdogan to decimate the Kurds in what remains of Rojava in northern Syria. Earlier this year, Turkey invaded the Afrin area with the assistance of Syrian reactionary armed opposition groups, leading to the forced displacement of large sections of Afrin’s Kurdish population and continuous violations of the human rights of the local population.

Turkey has already started reinforcing its positions on both sides of its border with Syria, while repeatedly threatening a new military offensive against the Kurdish led Democratic Union Party’s (PYD) self-administered areas east of the Euphrates river in northern Syria. This could lead to new forced displacements of the Kurdish population and more violations of human rights.

The most immediate responsibility of Middle Eastern socialists should be to help organize actions of solidarity between Arabs, Kurds, Turks, Iranians and other populations to oppose Turkey’s planned military invasions and to continue to single out the connections between the attacks on the Kurds and the attacks on all the democratic and progressive forces opposed to authoritarianism and religious fundamentalism in Syria and the region.

Similarly, we need to reiterate our opposition to Assad’s despotic regime, religious fundamentalist forces and the interventions of all foreign states in Syria, which are all acting against the initial objectives of the Syrian uprising which was for democracy, social justice and equality, and against sectarianism and racism.

Please let us know what plans you have for organizing actions of solidarity.
